The Dog Show #378 – May 25, 2016
Guest: Bronwen Dickey, author of “Pit Bull: The Battle Over an American Icon”. This book offers a much needed opportunity for a balanced and educated conversation about this controversial breed. “Pit Bull” is a good start to understanding the history of the breed and the aspects of human psychology and sociology that play into this challenge. Julie’s only complaint about the book is that it doesn’t acknowledge that aggression in Pitties, when it is there, is usually toward other dogs, not humans. The book sites dog bite statistics toward people in its defense of the breed, but that is not understanding the nature of the breed. Otherwise, this is an excellent book and a must-read!

What is the biggest contributor to the canine “overpopulation” problem in this country? Why are so many dogs being euthanized in shelters every DAY? Are there more dogs than there are homes for? How do we stop cruel breeders who keep dogs in unacceptable conditions? You might consider that the answers lie in first understanding dogs as a money-making product. Yes, they are members of our family in the United States, and they are also big business. Today, Julie Forbes talks with Kim Kavin, author of The Dog Merchants: Inside the Big Business of Breeders, Pet Stores, and Rescuers. An educated, balanced look into this extremely important topic. PupPod teaches dogs using the same basics as clicker training: operant and classical conditioning, and progresses to make itself harder as the game becomes easier for the dog. With the rise of technology in modern society, it really was only a matter of time before we created opportunities for dogs to interact directly with technology. With this development, comes a responsibility to ensure that these opportunities provide constructive interaction in a way that engages the dog’s brain and ultimately calms/grounds them. You’re going to be impressed by this one!
